ALCATRAZ ISLAND INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT

Talking tactile wayfinding exhibit for Alcatraz Island National Park.

Concept Realizations was commissioned to design and fabricate this tactile model of Alcatraz Island and its important buildings and navigation paths, for use by blind and low vision visitors.

We adapted a old 2D site survey of the island into a 3D model of the terrain, which we cast in concrete. The buildings were 3D printed in stainless steel and wired to electronics which prompt spoken descriptions of the features, written and recorded by park staff. It also prompts visual overlays in the display screen above.

This universal access wayfinding solution is on permanent display at the park’s visitor center, and is among the first signage to greet visitors as they arrive on the island.
