FRANK GEHRY RECEPTION DESK, L.A. GRAND HOTEL

Digital design preparation of cast and water jet-cut aluminum desk.

Concept Realizations prepared Gehry Partners’ design for the obsidian-finished aluminum reception desk at The Grand LA hotel in the new, Gehry-designed $1 billion complex opposite Walt Disney Concert Hall, translating the architect’s conventional design drawings into robotic-fabrication-ready production files. We digitally separated the desk’s irregular surfaces into patterns for 3D printing in a clean-burning wax-like material for lost wax casting, and prepared 2D design files of the flat surfaces for water-jet cutting.

We also integrated Gehry Partners’ designs for the wooden cabinetry, so our client could be assured all the finished components would fit together.
